So, What is the Intensive?
Over my years of performing, studying, and teaching, I've had (and seen my students have) some major breakthroughs. Things that had been frustrating for years suddenly clicked!
Having experienced many of these and helped dozens of students work through the same issues, I began to wonder if there was a better way to teach...
Something more efficient
Something more effective
Something more fun!
That's why I came up with the 10-week Next Level Clarinet Intensive. It captures all of my best teaching to give clarinetists at any level the information and experience that took me from a mediocre high schooler to a confident professional, in as little time as possible.
Without getting stuck in (or finally getting unstuck from) the classic pitfalls that myself and most clarinetists fall into.
It's basically a college course on improving your clarinet playing while making it less frustrating and more enjoyable than ever!
The Classic Clarinet Pitfalls...
Wishing for Better Sound?
Have you tried a million reeds, at least 2 different mouthpieces in the past year, and you are still wondering if a different ligature, barrel, or bell will improve your sound quality and stop the squeaks and grunts?
I have good news and bad news. The bad news...you might be missing some key clarinet fundamentals because with good fundamentals you can make almost any equipment work. The good news? We will be covering all of the fundamentals in the very first week of the Intensive, and you won't have to spend any money on new equipment!
Is Practice Frustrating?
Do you ever play things over and over again just for them to be just as bad the next day? That inconsistency is infuriating, and that kind of "pointless practice" is the leading cause of stagnation and eventually giving up music all together.
Now imagine a world where you knew that every rep you did was moving you forward. You are programming in the correct information, and can trust that it will stick. As you learn the opposite of "pointless practice" during the Intensive, your practice sessions will start sounding good and feeling fun again, just like when you first picked up the clarinet.
Are You a Rhythm Faker?
If you have to listen to a recording or hear someone else play it before you know how it goes, follow more than lead when playing in ensembles, and absolutely loathe the metronome, then you are undoubtedly a Rhythm Faker...
No judgement! Most of us are Rhythm Fakers because the way counting is taught makes rhythm faking come natural. But if you are ready to become a natural at rhythm then you will love week 3 of the Intensive where I will share my True Rhythm Mastery System, while actually working one-on-one to implement it on some Short Rhythm Studies. By the end you might even find the metronome to be helpful đ¤Ż
So You Want Faster Fingers?
Have you ever had Fast Finger Freakout? That's where anything at a fast tempo starts looking like just a jumble of ink that you hopelessly wiggle your fingers through, while always feeling too slow and like you are falling behind, just hoping for the day that you finally have fast fingers.
Spoiler Alert: Your fingers are already fast enough! What you will learn in the Intensive is that you actually need to get out of your own way, and systematically train your brain (not your muscles!) how the music goes. WITHOUT freaking out, so that you can actually be in control even as the tempo gets faster.
What Even Is Musicality?
We know it when we hear it, but no matter how hard we try to do the dynamics and articulations on the page it comes out sounding stiff and robotic more often than not...
Believe it or not, more dynamic contrast is not the only way to be musical. In fact, I bet you have heard recordings or performances where the extreme dynamic contrast was almost annoying, or have gotten goosebumps listening to just pure, steady, tranquil tone (like the beginning of the Debussy Premiere Rhapsodie). We are going to unpack all the ins and outs of what really makes a performance musical in the last two weeks of the Intensive.
And, How Does It Work?
The Next Level Clarinet Intensive is an online course, group lessons, asynchronous one-on-one hybrid...
Basically, it has the best form of learning for you, no matter what that may be!
The 10 weeks of the program are divided into 5 Modules that are:
1. FUNdamentals and Frustration-Free Practice
2. Time to Truly Master Rhythm
3. Using Physics to Improve Your Sound
4. Fast Finger Fortitude
5. Demystifying Musicality
Each of the two week Modules follows this structure:
Monday Week 1 - Group Training
Tuesday Week 1 - Thursday Week 2 -Â Lessons on Demand feedback on short exercises
Friday Week 2 - Group Reflection
And that repeats for all 5 Modules.
This allows you to not just gain the information in the trainings, but also gives you the experience of implementing them with my guidance to ensure you are getting the most out of everything, while learning from each other and filling in any gaps in the reflection at the end of each module.
I should also mention that you aren't on your own for what music to work on...
Each Module has curated exercises for you to focus on from The Next Generation Clarinet Method!

I hope seeing the demo of how easy, casual, and fun the Lessons on Demand are was helpful!
P.S. Marco Polo is free (you don't need to pay for the premium option)Â and it will work on any smartphone or tablet.
But, Why Those Modules?
Those 5 Modules capture the core components of my teaching philosophy, and when you stop and think about it, they are really all you need to be the musician that you want to be.
Want to have a beautiful sound and play smoothly between all of the registers?
That's Module 3 - Sound Quality.
Want to have dynamite technique and be able to nail all of the notes, even the scary fast ones?
That's Module 4 - Notes and Fingers.
Want to be more consistent and enjoy your practice more?
That's Module 1 - Fundamentals and Practice.
Want to finally get rhythm and feel like a natural rather than uncoordinated and untalented?
That's Module 2 - Rhythm.
And do you just want to be able to play some beautiful music?
That's Module 5 - Musicality.
All of your desires as a clarinetist and musician come down to these Modules because they are the core components of all of music. Whether you are just learning Twinkle Twinkle, or tackling the most challenging concerti it all is built off of these fundamentals of music!
And when you start to master all 5 Modules, that's when your clarinet journey takes off...
For example, if your end goal is to play some beautiful music, then Module 5 will teach you how, but if you don't understand rhythm from Module 2 or you can't get the clarinet to do what you want like we'll learn in Module 1 and 3 then you won't get very far.
That's the magic of the Intensive. It covers it all! Once you have all of these components in place it clicks, but if one gear of the machine isn't dialed in then you will struggle.
How Much $$$ to Enroll?
One of my favorite parts of running my own business is that I am completely in control of things like the pricing, so I can offer really cool programs like this for a crazy good price! The Intensive is just $150/week.
It is a little tricky to come up with a direct value comparison since this is such a unique program, but here are a couple of other things you could do to take your clarinet playing to the next level.
1. Take Private Lessons - $160-360/week
- Cost of $80-180/hr x 2 hours per week in the Intensive
- The efficiency of the Intensive is equivalent to at least 6 months of traditional lessons
- Between efficiency and cost the Intensive is at least double the value!
2. Take a College Course - $385/week
- Cost of $385/week estimated on a full course load at my alma mater Northwestern University
- College Course (on quarters system) = 10 weeks, Intensive = 10 weeks
- Requires application, audition, and enrolling in college
3. Keep Doing What You're Doing - Frustrations/week
- Cost of inaction and continued frustrations
- Where will you be in 10 weeks if you don't change?
- How will you change without new information and new routines?
- What is eliminating your frustration, fostering a joy of playing, and moving towards the clarinetist and musician you want to be worth to you?
