Tongue Position, Articulation, and Tongue Motion

Tongue position and articulation are two of the most misunderstood aspects of clarinet playing. Most of what your tongue does happens completely out of sight, which makes it hard for teachers to spot problems and hard for students to know what to fix.

In this post we're going to cover where your tongue should be when you play, how it should move when you articulate, and the most common mistakes that quietly undermine sound quality and note clarity.

1. Tongue Position: Where Should It Be?

Imagine a side profile of your face with a clarinet mouthpiece in your mouth. Your tongue should be sitting high in the back of the mouth, close to the upper back teeth, and the tip of the tongue should be near but not touching the reed.

To get the back of the tongue in the right position, say a dramatic E vowel, like a cat hissing. That raises the back of the tongue to where it needs to be. The problem with stopping at just an E is that it tends to pull the tip of the tongue back, creating too much distance between the tip and the reed.

To bring the tip forward without losing that high back position, add an OO sound to the mix. Not a flat English OO, which is too low in the mouth. Think of the German U or the French EU sound: it's forward and high at the same time. The result is something like a blend of E in the back and a focused, high OO in the front.

Put those together and you get a tongue that is high in the back, forward in the front, and close to the reed at the tip. That's the target position for playing.

Also worth noting: your teeth should be more or less vertically aligned, top and bottom. Our natural bite usually puts the lower teeth slightly behind the upper. Pushing the bottom jaw just slightly forward corrects that alignment and also helps firm up the bottom lip, which is a useful embouchure bonus.

2. Why Tongue Position Affects Your Sound

Tongue position is essentially about pressurizing and directing air. When the tongue is high and close to the reed, it creates a very narrow passage between the roof of the mouth and the reed. The large body of air from your lungs has to funnel through that narrow space, which naturally increases its pressure and focus.

High-pressure, focused air vibrates the reed more effectively. Low-pressure, diffuse air doesn't. The result is a noticeable difference in sound quality even if everything else stays exactly the same. You can play a note with a low, open tongue and a flat, unfocused sound, then raise the tongue into position and hear the sound sharpen and focus without blowing any harder or changing your embouchure.

That's how much tongue position alone can affect tone quality. It's not a minor variable.

3. Tongue Motion: How Articulation Should Work

Once you have good tongue position, the challenge of articulation is maintaining that position while also moving the tongue to separate notes.

Think of the very tip of the tongue as a tiny pivot point or fulcrum. The back and middle of the tongue stay completely still in that high, focused position. Only the very tip moves, pivoting just enough to touch the reed and then returning to neutral. On the reed, off the reed. That's it.

When the tongue is on the reed, it briefly stops the reed from vibrating. When it lifts off, the reed starts vibrating immediately and the note speaks. Air and embouchure stay completely steady through all of this. The tongue is the only variable changing.

Think of it like a light switch. The tongue flips between two positions: on the reed, not on the reed. No wind-up, no smacking, no pushing off before releasing. Just on and off, with as little motion as possible and as minimal effort as possible.

When this is working correctly, slurred passages and articulated passages should have identical sound quality. The notes will be separated in the articulated version, but the tone, the warmth, the focus should all be the same.

4. Air and Embouchure Moving with the Tongue

In everyday life, when we move our tongue, it's pretty normal for the jaw and lips to move along with it. Chewing, talking, swallowing all involve coordinated motion across multiple parts of the mouth. When you start articulating on the clarinet, those same habits can creep in.

The result is that slurring sounds great, but as soon as you start tonguing, the beginnings of notes get a little funny. The embouchure tightens slightly, or the air pressure pulses with each tongue stroke. The note settles in once it gets going, but the very start of each articulated note has a slightly different quality than the middle.

The fix is to practice keeping the air and embouchure completely steady while consciously moving only the tongue. It takes deliberate attention, but separating those movements is the core skill of good articulation.

5. Too Much Tongue Pressure

Another common issue is making too aggressive a contact with the reed. If the tongue hits the reed with force, or pushes against it before releasing for the next note, you get a thuddy, heavy start to every articulated note.

Combined with weak air support, this becomes really pronounced: a heavy thud at the start, then the note either not speaking or taking a moment to settle. The problem compounds in the upper register where higher notes require more precision, and an overly forceful tongue stroke can actually prevent the note from speaking cleanly.

The contact between the tongue and the reed should be light. The tongue is just interrupting the vibration, not forcing anything. Strong, steady air does the heavy lifting. The tongue just gets out of the way and then briefly touches the reed when needed.

6. Dropping the Tongue Position When Tonguing

Some players have a solid tongue position when slurring but unconsciously lower the tongue when they go to articulate, maybe because they're used to touching the reed from a lower position, or because the motion of articulating causes the tongue to drop.

The telltale sign is that the sound is great when slurring but spreads out and loses focus the moment articulation starts. The solution is to make sure the tongue stays in that high position whether it's touching the reed or not. The position doesn't change. Only the motion of the tip changes.

If this is an issue, it's also worth checking whether your embouchure is subconsciously tightening up when you focus on tonguing, which can also thin out the sound.

7. Hybrid Tongue Position

A variation of the previous mistake is having a good tongue position most of the time, but dipping down to touch the reed and then scrambling back up, creating an unsteady circular tongue motion rather than a simple pivot.

This shows up as weird pitch inconsistencies when tonguing, scooping or bending notes, and an overall unsteady quality to articulated passages. If you hear those kinds of inconsistencies specifically when you're tonguing, this is likely what's happening. The fix is the same: commit to keeping the back of the tongue in its high position and letting only the very tip move.

8. Anchor Tonguing

Anchor tonguing is when the tip of the tongue rests against the bottom lip or bottom teeth, and articulation is produced by moving the middle section of the tongue up to touch the reed.

Some professional players anchor tongue and manage to sound quite good. But it's a harder motion to execute cleanly, especially at faster tempos, because the middle of the tongue has to travel much further than the tip would in standard tonguing. If you notice that the tip of your tongue is touching your lower lip or teeth while you articulate, work on bringing it up and forward so that it's the true tip making contact with the reed.

9. Tip of the Tongue to the Tip of the Reed

Even without going all the way to anchor tonguing, some players tongue a little too far down the tongue surface. When that happens, the tongue has to travel further to reach the reed and tends to unglue itself slowly rather than releasing cleanly. The result is a fuzzy, unclear start to each note where the reed starts vibrating a little bit before the tongue fully releases.

The cue that fixes this almost every time is simple: tip of the tongue to the tip of the reed. Keep it as close to the very front as possible, and release it quickly. The contact should be quick, light, and precise. When you get it right, the note starts instantly and cleanly every time.
